75% – I can see the end!

Today marks 23 days since I started the 100in30 challenge. I’m up to 80 miles, a tiny bit ahead of the 76.6 that I should be at, since I had a few solid 4-5 mile runs in a row. I’ve really noticed the mental side of running in the last week or so. Blame it on the treadmill if you want, but I was feeling like as soon as I started running, my automatic thought was “how long until I get to stop?”.

This week, though, I’ve found that the first mile is the hardest (probably because I like to skip my warm up) and if I can distract myself through that, I’m happy to make it 4 or 5 miles without feeling uncomfortable or needing water. I’ve also noticed that after running I’m more focused and able to get things done, which kind of reinforces for me that I could never do a desk job!

Finally, lots of people have asked me about how I’m completing the challenge. I’d like to post a better rundown when I’m done (perhaps while on the plane to SF!) but for now, here are my “rules”:

1. You must run every day.

2. You must run until a. you run out of time, or b. you really can’t run anymore.

3. You have to set aside enough time each day that you are able to complete the three miles needed to stay on track (ie if I run 8 minute miles, I need to set aside a minimum of 24 minutes for my workout).

So far, I’ve only had one day where I had to call in rule b (I was just super tired in general) and one other day where I broke rule three because there just weren’t enough hours in the day. So, I guess the informal rule 4 is one time, you can break a rule :).

See you at the finish line!

An Update

So, I am two weeks into the 100in30 challenge. I’m heading off for a run now, but the update so far is that after today’s run, I should be at about 48 miles – putting me right on track for tomorrow’s halfway point.

Now that I’m getting used to the idea of running every day, it hasn’t been so hard to schedule things. I need to run at least 3 miles every day to stay on goal, so I just make sure that I have about half an hour free each day… and let’s be honest, if I let myself I could waste that time on Facebook anyways!

The initial soreness that I was feeling from no rest days is gone, and my laundry pile definitely grew, but that’s about it. This past week I did have one or two “bad” runs – the kind where you want it to be over before you’ve even started, but most were great. I’ve been trying to stay hydrated throughout the day, since that seems to help. Yesterday, I came home to Aurora at the last minute and didn’t get to the gym at Mac before leaving. So, at night, I put on about 15 layers of neon and headed outside. It. was. awesome. Nothing like a treadmill to make you forget how much you like to run :)

See you next week for what should be a 75 mile update! Yikes!

Evening Cravings

Tonight it’s dark early (I miss you, Daylight Savings Time!), cold, and generally crispy around here. I’d like to be curled up here

munching on this

and reading this book, which I started a million years ago and can’t find time to finish, but which I also think is really, really good!

A November Challenge

I’m definitely the kind of person that likes a challenge. And, lately, I’ve felt like I need something to work towards with running. It’s still fun, but I wanted a goal that would take some work. So, I’ve decided to try and make it to 100 miles in 30 days. That’s only 3 or 4 miles a day, something that’s pretty reasonable for me, but I’ve never run every day for a month before.

6 days in, it’s going well. I’ve already run 21 miles and while I was sore for the first few days, I’m getting used to it. Today I have a quick 3 miles on the calendar to bring me up to 24 for the week.

Every Sunday I’ll try to post an update here – and I’m hoping it will keep me accountable! Anyone up for a gym date?

A little lightheaded…

So, I realized today that I forgot to document a big event on the blog. Not that I blog with any kind of reasonable schedule or routine anyways, but this one is relevant. I like to call it the big chop. On a Wednesday afternoon in August, instead of driving home from work I headed straight to the hairdresser. And, call it crazy, genius or just plain low blood sugar, I chopped off (and donated!) 13 inches of hair. Hence the lightheadedness, as everything really does feel a little more airy with such short hair.

Here is a little before and after so you can get an idea:

Before, with Mike on Thanksgiving, 2011

And after, taken with good old Photobooth a few hours after the event, in August 2012.

I should mention that this post was finally written because one of my favourite bloggers, Krystal, wrote about her big chop today too. In other cool news, Krystal also works at Google Mountain View, like Mike! Small world.

Are any of you considering a big hair change? I say go for it!
